At the moment there are about max I can reduce this if necessary and they average around 2MP each. Keep the images diary small - 1mb ish or smaller : as the TV may almost probably won't have a fast USB reader as it isn't needed for what it does and large images will just give you a blank screen as it tries to read them, plus the display quality isn't high even full HD and making the images large is a water of space.
Many or most cameras start a new folder after images, but I think this is just for easier organization, not because of any limit. FAT32 is limited to ,, files. The more frequently encountered limit is that files cannot be larger than 4GB. Many TVs won't play images if they're in the root folder, so put the images into a folder you can call it something like "Photos" or "Presentation". I'd say it's safe to assume that a player should be able to deal with photos in a folder. That's the limit I've seen on some cameras which likely use similar FAT access software.
Downscaling them to full HD resolution x would probably be wise, as well, since you never know what the equipment will support in terms of the maximum resolution of photos. It's usually safe to assume that it can display photos of the same resolution as the screen.
If you have your own player device then there's a lot less to go wrong in relying on the HDMI connection than on the vagaries of the media player software inside the TV. I've got a Roku 2 XS. There is a "media player" app that allows you to play jpeg, video or mp3 from a thumb drive. I play the stuff on a 50" plasma. No sweat, easy stuff. That's important if you want your camera to be able to display the images, but for a TV or media player device it really shouldn't make any difference.
That's a pretty good idea. No need to consider the TV's capabilities. Like others said, it would be very helpful to know make and model. I had to do it on the other plasma TV I had before. And if memory serves me right it had some limit on the drive capacity it could handle. Also you might try to use external hard drive which will be formatted to NTFS.
I would think though, that all TV's with the option to display photos, would have to honor the standard so that people can simply take the card out of their cameras and use them in the TV. Well following the camera standards would certainly work, although if you're giving a copy of a memory stock to a friend so they can look at photos it would probably be a little less cryptic to use something more self-explanatory than "DCIM".
You may have a point with regard to special characters, long file names, etc. The biggest issues I've seen are placing files in the root folder which, even if it did work has a limitation on the number of files and in the number of files in any given directory.
I could simply collect email addresses at the event and send the email out after the event, or more likely, just use my phone send out the email right away. Maybe just text people the link even with a message app, Hangouts, Whatsapp, Line, Facebook, whatever. People can just go home and download the photos they want from the online site then. I'm probably missing something, but I'm not sure how that would help with the OP's goal of having a background display at the event?
